South Africa Critical Skills Work Visa Checklist

The Critical Skills Work Visa is for foreigners with a verifiable offer of employment in an occupation on South Africa's Critical Skills List. It is not a work-seekers visa. Based on the official guidance (dha.gov.za), September 2026.

Eligibility

• A verifiable employer has given you an offer of employment.
• Your occupation is on the most recent Critical Skills List.
• Select one occupation or skill only, marked in black pen.
• For CGM / Director occupations, check the Critical Skills Technical Report Table 10.

Core documents

• Completed and signed application form.
• Passport plus a certified copy from the issuing authority, with a valid endorsement showing your current status, valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended departure date (Regulation 9(1)(a)).
• Apply in person, normally at least 60 days before the visa expires; if the endorsement has less than 30 days, within 7 working days of expiry.
• Medical report signed by a practising doctor, not older than 6 months.
• Police clearance from countries where you lived more than 12 months in the past 5 years, not older than 6 months.
• Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or via a yellow fever area.

Employment documents

• Offer of employment / contract stating the employment conditions, signed by employer and applicant.
• Employer's written undertaking to cover repatriation costs (including accompanying family).
• Employer's written undertaking to ensure the passport stays valid.
• Proof of the Critical Skills List selection — one occupation, marked in black pen.

Qualifications and skills

• SAQA evaluation showing the NQF level, translated into an official language by a sworn translator.
• Proof of application for professional registration where the law requires it, with a SAQA-recognised body.
• Valid membership of the relevant professional body (university lecturers exempt).
• Confirmation of skills / qualifications and post-qualification experience from a professional body or government department (university lecturers exempt).

Family documents (where applicable)

• Marriage certificate — a foreign marriage needs apostille from the issuing authority and a sworn translation.
• Life partnership notarial agreement — apostilled, signed by both, proving a relationship of at least 2 years that is ongoing and exclusive.
• Spousal affidavit plus proof of cohabitation, shared finances or children where applicable.
• Full birth certificate for each dependent child.
• Recognition of customary marriage (where applicable), divorce decree, deceased spouse's death certificate, or legal separation order.

Why applications are refused

• No offer of employment (it is not a work-seekers visa).
• The occupation is not on the most recent Critical Skills List, or more than one is selected.
• SAQA has not evaluated the qualification, or it has not been sworn-translated.
• The medical or police report is older than 6 months.
• The employer is not verifiable or not in good standing.
• Fraud or misrepresentation — the visa will be revoked and criminal charges may follow.
