Japan quirks worth knowing
- Not the visa format: the Japanese passport is 35 × 45 portrait, but the Japanese visa photo (for foreigners entering Japan) is the odd 45 × 35 landscape format. Two different documents, two different shapes — see our Japan visa photo page if you're applying to enter Japan.
- Strict head band: the 32–36 mm chin-to-crown band is checked on paper applications; use the framing guide in the tool and you'll stay inside it.
- Where you apply matters: applications inside Japan go through your municipal office; overseas applications go through the embassy or consulate. The photo spec is the same either way.
