The one quirk: it's landscape

Unlike most ID photos worldwide, Japan's visa photo is wider than it is tall (45 × 35 mm, not 35 × 45). Photos submitted in the vertical format are a frequent reason for re-submission. The tool pre-selects the correct landscape crop.

Japan visa photos travel with a paper application — submitted at a Japanese embassy or consulate, or attached to a Certificate of Eligibility pack — so most applicants need a 45 × 35 mm print, not a file. The crop is landscape, which is why files shot in the usual portrait format come back for re-submission; print the 531 × 413 px export at 300 DPI and trim to the 45 × 35 outline.
