Inside the 1:1 square: head height must be 50-69% of the image, eyes 56-69% up from the bottom edge. A tiny head with lots of empty space — the crop on the right — is the most common rejection reason.

Online upload, square crop

US visa applications are filed online through the DS-160, where you upload a square JPEG, and a consular officer may still ask for a 2 × 2 inch print at the interview. Export the 600 × 600 px file the tool produces and keep both options open — the same crop prints true at 2 × 2 inches on 300 DPI paper.
