How Old Can a Passport Photo Be? Validity Windows by Country
A passport photo doesn't come with an expiration date — but every issuing authority sets a freshness window. Take one too early and it can be rejected for being "stale", even though it looks perfectly fine. Here are the exact windows we track, and how to tell when yours is too old.
The quick answer
Most countries follow the ICAO-aligned default: taken within the last 6 months. A few set their own — Singapore wants 3 months, Canada allows 12. If your application form says nothing, 6 months is the safe assumption.

Why the window exists
Passport photos feed biometric face matching at border gates. The face in the file has to match the face at the counter — not just today, but for the next 5–10 years. A photo older than the window starts as a mismatch risk and gets worse: hairstyles change, weight changes, glasses come and go. That's also why "it still looks like me" is not an argument that works at the counter — the window is enforced by date, not by opinion.
What "taken" actually means
The clock runs from the date the photo was taken to the date you submit your application — not the date your passport is issued. A photo shot in January and submitted in July is out of window for a 6-month country even if nothing changed. Digital uploads don't help either: portals can't verify age, but staff can, and interviews make the date moot.
Retake even if the window says "fine"
- Big appearance change — major weight loss/gain, facial surgery or tattoos, a new daily-worn head covering. Any of these invalidates a photo of any age.
- Babies and young kids — faces change in weeks, not months. Shoot as close to submission as possible (see the baby & child guide).
- Reused from a previous passport — almost always out of window by definition, since you only renew every 5–10 years.
- Printed from an old file — the file doesn't age, the photo does. Check the original shoot date, not the print date.
Common questions
My photo is 7 months old. It looks exactly like me. Can I use it?
For a 6-month country: no. The window is a hard rule, and "looks the same" isn't checkable — retake it. It costs five minutes with our browser photo tool.
Can I reuse the same photo for passport and visa?

Is there a minimum age?
Only the window — newer is always fine. A photo taken yesterday is valid everywhere (as long as it meets the size, background and expression rules).
