Ireland Passport Application and Renewal
Irish passports are applied for through Passport Online, which is available worldwide, and the fees and turnaround times are published. This page describes Irish rules. Based on the official guidance (ireland.ie / DFA), September 2026.
How to apply
- Passport Online is the fastest way to apply and is available worldwide, 24/7.
- Processing time starts only once all required documents are received.
- Check progress with the Passport Tracker (received, awaiting documents, verifying, processing, printing).
First application vs renewal
- An adult passport is valid for 10 years (aged 18 and over).
- You can apply for a new passport within 12 months before the current one expires.
- If you have never held one, or your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago, you must apply as a first-time adult applicant.
- If a passport is lost, stolen or damaged, report it and reapply straight away through Passport Online.
Fees
| Adult standard 10-year (online) | €75 |
| Child 5-year (online) | €20 |
| Passport card | €35 (adult passport + card €100; child + card €45) |
| Outside Ireland | + €15 postage; each child application + €5 |
| Post Passport | Adult €80 / child €30 (plus postage) |
Public counters in Dublin and Cork charge an adult renewal passport fee of €95 (same-day appointment €150 / four-day €75) and a child renewal of €45.
Turnaround times
| Simple adult renewal | 10 working days |
| Complex adult / child renewal | 15 working days |
| First-time online (adult and child) | 20 working days |
| Passport card only | 10 working days |
Times do not include postage (longer from abroad) and are longer if documents are missing. First-time applications cannot be expedited. All child renewals are treated as complex, because full guardian consent must be verified.
Common pitfalls
- Treating a passport last issued over 15 years ago as a simple renewal (it is a first-time application).
- Expecting a first-time application to be expedited.
- Underestimating child renewals, which run to 15 working days.
- Forgetting postage time.
- Not budgeting the €15 overseas postage.
- Delaying a report after a loss or theft.
