MIME type lookup

A MIME type is the standard label a server sends with a file to tell the browser what it is — image/png, application/pdf, text/css and so on. Getting it right matters for things like .htaccess rules, CDN configuration, download behaviour and whether a file renders in the browser or opens in an app.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MIME type?
A MIME type (also called a media type) is a standard label that tells a browser or server what kind of file it is, written as a type and subtype such as image/png or application/json. The server sends it with the file so the client knows how to handle it.

How do I find the MIME type for a file extension?
Type the extension (for example webp or .webp) into the search box. The tool matches it against a built-in table of common extensions and shows the MIME type.

Can I look up the MIME type the other way round?
Yes. Type a MIME type such as image/ or application/json to find which extensions map to it.

Is this list complete?
No. It covers the common web, image, document, audio, video, and font types. There are many registered MIME types, so treat it as a quick lookup for everyday files rather than an exhaustive registry.

Is my input sent anywhere?
No. The whole lookup runs in your browser against a table built into the page; nothing is uploaded.

Why do some types have a charset?
Text-based types such as text/html are often served with a charset, for example text/html; charset=utf-8. The MIME type is the part before the semicolon; the charset says how the bytes are encoded.
