Passport Photo Checker

Check an existing passport or visa photo against the official rules — in your browser. Nothing is uploaded; the image never leaves your device.

How the check works

The checker reads the published specification for the country you pick, then measures your image with Canvas: the pixel dimensions and aspect ratio are compared to the official format, a lightweight face detector locates the head for an indicative head-occupancy and eye-line estimate, and the border is sampled for background brightness, evenness and colour cast. Overall exposure and contrast are measured too.

If no face is detected — for example an unusual crop or an angled shot — the checker says so and falls back to size-and-ratio checks only, rather than guessing. Items that cannot be judged from a file (print finish, the true printed size, whether the photo is a scan) are listed for you to confirm yourself.

Privacy: everything runs locally in your browser. No image is uploaded, stored or transmitted.

Which countries are covered

The country list is generated from the same size chart the maker uses, and the checker parses each country's published figures from it — so the rules it applies are the ones on the photo sizes page, not a separate set kept in two places. The current list runs across the US (passport and visa), the DV lottery, Schengen, the UK, China, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and the larger set of European passport formats. Pick the document, not just the country: a US visa and a US passport share a 2 × 2 inch print but are checked against slightly different digital expectations.

Why the checker can fail to judge

Two things it can never see. The first is anything that only exists on paper: whether your print came out at true size, whether the paper is glossy or matte, whether the image is a scan of an old photo or a fresh capture. Those items are listed as "confirm yourself" rather than scored, because a file cannot answer them. The second is a face it cannot find — a steep angle, a heavy crop, or a subject turned away will stop the head and eye-line measurement, and the checker will tell you it found no face and fall back to the size and ratio checks instead of guessing. A pass here means the measurable requirements are met, not that a human will accept the photo.

This tool is a specification pre-check: it measures your file against the published size rules before you submit. For US applications, the State Department's official Photo Tool is the government's own validator; use that for the final check, and treat the results here as a pre-flight. Starting from a US application? Make the photo first with the US passport photo maker or the US visa photo maker.

How to check a passport photo online

Use this online passport photo checker to test a finished image before you submit or print it. It works the same whether you are looking for a passport photo checker or you simply want to check passport photo rules: pick the country and document, drop in the file, and read the per-item result. Every measurement is taken against the published size chart, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

  1. Choose the country / document in the list.
  2. Click or drag a photo into the box.
  3. Press Check this photo and read the results.

If it flags a problem, fix the frame with the image cropper, compare the file rules in the digital file requirements guide, then run the check again. Starting from scratch? Make the photo first with the US passport or US visa photo maker, then come back to check it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser — the image is read with Canvas and never leaves your device. There is no upload and no server.

Which countries does the checker cover?
It uses the same specification chart as the rest of the site, so it covers every country in the passport and visa photo size chart.

What does the checker test?
Pixel dimensions, aspect ratio against the chosen format, head position (when a face is detected), background brightness, evenness and colour cast, and overall exposure and contrast.

What can it not check?
Anything that is not visible in the file — print finish (gloss or matte), whether a print measures the right size, and whether the photo is a scan or photocopy. Those are flagged for you to confirm.

Is it free?
Yes. The checker is free and runs locally; if it finds a problem you can jump to the photo maker to fix it.
