India OCI Photo Requirements — the Square, Light-Background Spec
OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) registration uses a photo rule that is not the same as an Indian passport photo. Square frame, a light but not white background, and a fully online upload. First, the one thing most people get wrong
OCI photos need a plain light-coloured background — and the official wording explicitly rules out white (“plain light color background (not white)”). This is the exact opposite of an Indian passport photo, which wants a plain white background. If you reuse a passport photo for your OCI registration, the background alone can get it rejected.

The official portals warn plainly: photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may delay your application.

Bottom line: an OCI photo and a passport photo are not interchangeable — the background, the shape and the way the photo is submitted are all different. If your trip or application needs the passport format instead, start from the India passport photo requirements (35 × 45 mm, white).
Why the plain-white photo fails here
- White is excluded by name. The OCI spec asks for a light background and calls out “not white” — so the most common passport-photo background is the most likely rejection cause.
- Face coverage matters. A photo where the face fills less than about 80% of the frame does not meet the spec.
- The file has its own rules. Over 200 KB, a non-JPEG format, or a rectangle instead of a square (unequal height and width) will not pass.
- Photos and signature are checked together. Either one being out of spec can hold up the application.
Submitting: it is all online
The OCI application, supporting documents, photo and signature are submitted online. Originals are only needed later for in-person verification — you do not file a paper form or paper copies. If an uploaded file is found to be defective, the mission or FRRO notifies you by email and you resubmit to them, and they upload it into the system.
