Baby and toddler passport photos follow the same official rules as adult ones — but the practical problems are different: a face that will not sit still, a hand holding the child, a bouncer in the frame. How the baby check differs

It reads the same published specifications as the passport photo checker — the country you pick, straight from the size chart — but loosens the tolerances that trip up infants: a slightly smaller head in the frame is accepted, and uneven lighting is judged more gently. The background, head size and centring are measured with Canvas; a face box is found with the browser-side detector.

Infant faces often defeat automatic detection. When the detector finds nothing, the tool says so instead of guessing: drag the dashed box over the head yourself and the head-size and centring checks run on your marking. A parent marking the head is more reliable than a detector on a newborn.

Do babies need their own passport photo?
Yes. Every applicant, including a baby, needs their own compliant photo, and it must meet the same size, background and expression rules as an adult's.

Why does my baby's photo get rejected?
The most common baby-specific causes are a helper's hand or arm in frame, a chair back, bouncer or toy visible, the child not alone in the photo, and eyes not open or visible. The checklist in the tool covers each one.

How do I hold a baby for a passport photo?
Lay the child on a plain white sheet and shoot from directly above, or hold them against a plain light wall. Keep your hands, arms and any support out of the frame, and use a plain white surface rather than propping them in furniture.

What if the tool cannot find my baby's face?
That is normal for infants. The tool says so and lets you drag a box over the head by hand, then runs the head-size and centring checks on your marking.

Does the tool change my photo?
