Bolivia Passport Documents Checklist
The Bolivian electronic passport (pasaporte electrónico) is the official travel document for Bolivian citizens. It is issued by DIGEMIG (Dirección General de Migración) inside Bolivia and by consular offices for citizens living abroad. Verified against the Bolivian Foreign Ministry consular portal, October 2026.
The 15-second answer
The application is in person — the passport system requires it. You bring your identity document plus a birth certificate, and your case decides the rest (minors, loss, or renewal add specific papers). The consular page publishes no photograph and no fee, so none is invented here.
Who issues it and where you apply
- Inside Bolivia: DIGEMIG (Dirección General de Migración).
- Abroad: the Bolivian consular office where you live.
- The document is the electronic passport; the process starts when you request the issuance of the electronic passport at the consular office and present the documents.
Is it done in person?
Yes. Because of the way the passport system works, the procedure is in person (de forma presencial) — you lodge the application yourself at DIGEMIG or the consular office.
What to bring, by case
The consular portal lists the requirements in four blocks. Take originals plus simple photocopies unless it says otherwise.
Adults
- Cédula de identidad or the assignment of an identity number (asignación de número de identidad) — original and a simple photocopy.
- Certificado de nacimiento (birth certificate) — original, up to date, plus a simple photocopy (if you are Bolivian through your parents).
Minors
- Certificado de nacimiento — original, up to date.
- Cédula de identidad or assignment of an identity number — original and a simple photocopy.
- Parents' documents — original and photocopy: passport or cédula de identidad for Bolivian parents; a foreigner's CIE card or passport for foreign parents. The documents are checked against the originals.
- Authorisation to issue the passport by sworn statement (Declaración Jurada) before a competent authority of the receiving country, or a Bolivian consular office, if one parent is in another country. It is not needed if both parents are present for the application.
Lost or stolen passport
- Cédula de identidad, assignment of an identity number, or an up-to-date original birth certificate, plus a simple photocopy.
- Report of loss or theft (denuncia de pérdida o robo) before the competent authorities of the receiving country. A sworn statement at the consular office may be used instead.
Renewal
- Cédula de identidad, assignment of an identity number, or an up-to-date original birth certificate, plus a simple photocopy.
- Your expired passport, or one expiring within the next 6 months, or one that is damaged or has run out of pages.
- A letter of request to the consular authority explaining why the passport needs to be renewed.
Photograph
The consular requirements page lists no photograph among the documents to bring, and it publishes no photo specification (no size, background or head-height figures). Treat this as an on-site capture document: the image is taken within the passport system when you apply. Bring no photo, and confirm the current procedure with the consular office or DIGEMIG before you travel. If you need a photo for a different document, see the photo size chart.
Fees
The consular requirements page consulted for this checklist does not publish the fee. It is left blank here rather than guessed — confirm the amount with the consular office or DIGEMIG at the time of your appointment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Bolivian passport by post or online?
No. Because of the passport system, the procedure is in person at DIGEMIG in Bolivia or at a Bolivian consular office abroad.
Do I need a photo for a Bolivian passport?
The consular requirements page lists no photograph among the papers to bring and publishes no photo size, so this is treated as an on-site capture document. Bring no photo and confirm with the office.
What documents does an adult need for a Bolivian passport?
A cédula de identidad or assignment of an identity number (original plus photocopy) and, if you are Bolivian through your parents, an up-to-date birth certificate (original plus photocopy).
What if one parent cannot attend for a minor's passport?
You need authorisation by sworn statement before a competent authority of the receiving country or a Bolivian consular office. It is not required if both parents lodge the application.
My Bolivian passport is lost. What do I do?
File a report of loss or theft with the competent authorities of the country you are in (a sworn statement at the consular office may be used instead) and bring your cédula or identity-number assignment or an up-to-date birth certificate.
When should I renew a Bolivian passport?
When it has expired, is damaged, has no pages left, or expires within the next 6 months. You also need a letter to the consular authority explaining the need to renew.

Source note: the electronic passport, its issuance by DIGEMIG and consular offices, the in-person rule and the four requirement blocks (adults, minors, lost/stolen, renewal) are from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry consular portal consulados.cancilleria.gob.bo/pasaporte/ (checked October 2026). That page publishes no photo specification and no fee, so neither is stated here.
