Documents for a first-time applicant
- Birth Certificate — proof of Ghanaian citizenship.
- Documents to support identity — such as a Driver's Licence or National ID card.
- Proof of profession — an introductory letter from your employer if you are employed, or a work ID card showing your name, your organisation's name and your position. A student ID works if you are in school. Homemakers, housewives, the unemployed and people in the non-formal sector (mechanics, hairdressers, seamstresses, traders and similar) do not need proof. Registered business owners and self-employed applicants must produce their business registration certificate.
Sample documents you may be asked for
The portal lists five sample documents that an applicant may be asked to provide at the appointment: an affidavit, a police report, a gazette, a birth certificate and a naturalisation certificate. Which of these applies depends on your circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Ghanaian passport cost?
On the official portal's April 2025 listing, a Standard 32-page application is GHS 500.00 and a Standard 48-page application is GHS 644.00, while an Expedited 32-page application is GHS 700.00 and an Expedited 48-page application is GHS 800.00. Fees change, so confirm the current figure on the passport portal before you pay.
Where do I apply for a Ghanaian passport?
Applications are started online on the official passport portal and then completed in person at a Passport Application Centre (PAC). The portal lists fourteen centres, including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Sunyani, Ho, Tamale, Ridge, Tema, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Wa and three Premium PACs.
What documents must a first-time applicant bring?
A birth certificate as proof of Ghanaian citizenship, a document that supports identity such as a Driver's Licence or National ID card, and proof of profession. The full list is set out above.
Do homemakers, students or the self-employed need proof of profession?
Students can show a student ID. Homemakers, housewives, the unemployed and people in the non-formal sector such as mechanics, hairdressers, seamstresses and traders do not need proof of profession. Registered business owners and self-employed applicants must produce their business registration certificate instead.
What photograph does a Ghanaian passport need?
The passport photograph and biometrics are captured at the Passport Application Centre as part of the application, so you do not bring a printed passport photo for the passport itself. For any photo you need for another purpose, see the Ghana passport photo page and the size chart, and check it with the passport photo checker before printing.
Check any photo you need for a related application against the rejection reasons guide, the passport photo checker and the photo size chart, and shoot at home with the at-home photo guide. Browse every checklist on the checklists hub.
