Ghana Visa Checklist — e-Visa, Visa on Arrival & the 5 Steps
Ghana's visa system runs on three tracks: visa-free nationalities, travellers who can be issued a visa on arrival or emergency entry visa at the port, and those who must obtain a visa before travelling. The official e-Visa covers tourist and business travel and is processed in a standard 96 hours. This page covers the main items — classification and process. Stage A — Work out which track applies to you
- ☐ ECOWAS member states (including Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Liberia, Benin and Cabo Verde) are visa-free on all passport types.
- ☐ All passport types visa-free (60 days): Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Mauritius; and Southern and East African states (Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Eswatini, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya).
- ☐ Official and diplomatic passports only, visa-free (90 days): Cuba, Brazil, Iran, Hong Kong and Germany.
- ☐ AU, regional economic community and UN / specialised-agency official passports are visa-free (60 days).
- ☐ Gratis visa (60 days) is granted for Egypt and Rwanda at the port or by the mission.
- ☐ Other African Union member states require a visa (issued at the port or by the mission, 60 days).

Stage B — Understand where the visa is issued
- ☐ Abroad (embassies): mainly the e-Visa for tourism and business.
- ☐ In-country: the categories include Transit Visa, Emergency Entry Visa (EEV), Visa on Arrival and Re-Entry Visa.
- ☐ If you arrive without a visa, an EEV or a visa on arrival may be granted at the immigration officer's discretion, under the conditions set in the regulations.
Stage C — Apply for the e-Visa (official five steps)
- ☐ Step 1 — Eligibility check (about 2 minutes) on the official portal.
- ☐ Step 2 — Create an account (about 3 minutes) with your email address.
- ☐ Step 3 — Complete the application and upload your documents (about 15 minutes).
- ☐ Step 4 — Pay online and submit (about 5 minutes).
- ☐ Step 5 — Receive the decision by email; if approved, the e-Visa is sent to that same address.
Stage D — Know the timing and how to use it
- ☐ The portal states standard processing of 96 hours — apply with that buffer before you travel.
- ☐ Once approved, the e-Visa can be shown electronically or as a printed copy at any Ghanaian port of entry.
- ☐ The portal describes the e-Visa as an ICAO-compliant travel document available to travellers from 190+ countries.
- ☐ A 6-digit verification code is emailed to you; if you lose your reference number, recover it by logging in to your account.

Frequently asked questions
Who needs a visa for Ghana?
