Iraq Passport Documents & Procedure

Iraqi passports are issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and its passport directorate, at home and at Iraqi missions abroad. This checklist collects what the MFA’s own pages state: what a passport is, how long it runs, the documents the procedure calls for — including four recent colour photographs — and the step-by-step route for a lost, damaged or stolen passport. Verified against mofa.gov.iq, October 2026. For the photo itself, see the Iraq passport photo page.

What the MFA publishes

The MFA defines the document plainly:

جواز السفر هو المستند الذي تصدره الدولة لمواطنيها لغرض السفر إلى خارج البلد.

“A passport is the document the state issues to its citizens for the purpose of travelling outside the country.” Issuance and renewal run through the passport directorate and Iraqi missions abroad, and the MFA also offers an electronic appointment service and a transaction-query service for submitted requests.

On validity, the MFA states:

تمدد الجوازات بعد انتهاء مدة نفاذها أي الفترة المحددة من تاريخ الإصدار.

“Passports are extended after their period of validity ends, i.e. the period specified from the date of issue.” Validity therefore runs from the date of issue, and a passport can be extended after that period ends.

Documents to bring

Across its passport procedure the MFA calls for the following papers. Bring originals and, where a mission asks, copies:

PhotographsFour recent colour photographs (see below)
Proof of nationalityCivil-status ID or nationality certificate, as applicable
Current or old passportWhere one is held (for renewal or a replacement)
Investigation formModel no. 1, signed and stamped by the consul (loss cases)
Police / residence reportFor a lost, damaged or stolen passport
Passport photo sizeNot published — the MFA gives a count and kind, not a size

The four colour photographs

The MFA’s published photo requirement is a number and a kind, not a size. In the passport procedure it states, at step 7:

يقدم أربع صور حديثة ملونة.

“Four recent colour photographs are submitted.” The MFA does not publish a millimetre size, a background colour or a pixel/dpi figure, so this checklist does not repeat an invented number — see the Iraq passport photo page and treat any specific size you see elsewhere as unverified.

Lost, damaged or stolen passport: the procedure

The MFA sets out an eleven-step procedure for a lost, damaged or stolen passport, from the initial report through to approval and notification:

  1. Report the loss
  2. Complete an investigation form (model no. 1), signed and stamped by the consul
  3. File a police or residence report
  4. Place a newspaper notice of the loss, where required
  5. Give a consular statement / record
  6. Evidence of nationality (civil-status ID or nationality certificate)
  7. Submit four recent colour photographs (step 7)
  8. Verification of the records
  9. Complete the expatriate form
  10. The passport directorate reviews and approves
  11. The mission is notified and issues the document

Where a passport is withdrawn or the holder is deported, the MFA also refers to a passport of passage (جواز المرور) for a single re-entry into Iraq. Confirm the exact order with the mission handling your case, since the eleven steps are spread across the MFA’s passport pages.

What is not published

The MFA pages checked do not publish a fee for a passport, a processing time, or a photo size. This checklist therefore leaves those blank rather than quoting an unofficial figure. Check the current position on mofa.gov.iq or with the mission handling your application.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos do I need for an Iraqi passport?
Four recent colour photographs, submitted at step 7 of the MFA’s passport procedure.

What size is an Iraqi passport photo?
Not published. The MFA states the number and kind of photographs (four recent colour) but gives no millimetre size, background colour or pixel figure.

What documents does the procedure call for?
Four recent colour photos, proof of nationality, and the investigation form (model no. 1) plus a police or residence report in loss cases, along with your old passport where held.

How do I replace a lost or stolen Iraqi passport?
Follow the MFA’s eleven-step procedure: report the loss, complete and have the model-no.-1 form stamped, file a police or residence report, and supply the four recent colour photographs (step 7), through to directorate approval and mission notification.

How long is an Iraqi passport valid?
The MFA states that passports are extended after their period of validity ends, with the period specified from the date of issue.

Is there a passport fee or processing time published?
The MFA pages checked do not publish a fee or a processing time, so no figure can be quoted here. Confirm with the MFA or the mission handling your application.

Source note: the definition of a passport, the extension statement, the four recent colour photographs (step 7), the lost-passport procedure and the passport-of-passage reference are from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mofa.gov.iq (passport pages and home page; evidence captured October 2026). No photo size, fee or processing time is published there. A re-check of mofa.gov.iq at publication time returned a 530 origin-DNS error, so this checklist rests on the earlier captured MFA text.
