What a photo quietly carries

A camera records more than pixels. Alongside the image it writes a block of tags: the make and model of the device, the date and time the shutter fired, the orientation the shot was taken in, and — when location services are on — the GPS coordinates of where you stood. On a phone photo taken at home, that last one is the reason to look: the location is written into the file itself, so it travels with the photo wherever it is posted.

This viewer is read-only. It parses the JPEG APP1 “Exif” segment and shows the tags it finds in plain language, with the GPS position converted to decimal degrees. To actually strip the metadata before you share a file, use the EXIF remover — view first, then remove. If you are preparing a photo for an application, check its dimensions on the photo sizes chart and validate it with the passport photo checker; shrinking a file often strips metadata too, which is why it is worth checking with the image compressor before and after.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my photo?
No. The file is read into your browser and parsed there. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored — close the tab and the file is gone.

Which file types are supported?
JPEG (the APP1 “Exif” segment) is fully read. PNG is accepted, but PNG files normally carry no EXIF, so the tool will usually report none. HEIC, HEIF and RAW formats are not supported.

What metadata can it show?
The camera make and model, orientation, the date and time, and the GPS location if present. It is a focused reader for those fields, not a full EXIF dump — it does not read XMP, ICC or IPTC blocks.

Can it show the GPS coordinates as a location?
It shows the latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes and seconds and as decimal degrees. It does not turn that into a street address — that would require sending the coordinates somewhere, which this tool does not do.

How is this different from the EXIF remover?
This page only reads the metadata. The EXIF remover exports a clean copy with the metadata stripped. View first, then remove.

What if the photo has no metadata?
You get a clear “no EXIF metadata found” message rather than an error — many edited or re-saved photos have already had their metadata removed.

Scope, stated plainly: this reader walks the JPEG APP1 segment and reads Make, Model, Orientation, DateTime and the GPS IFD. It is not a full metadata dump (no XMP/ICC/IPTC) and it does not open HEIC or RAW containers. Malformed or truncated segments are handled without crashing — you get a note, not a blank page.
