Colombia Passport Application Guide
A Colombian passport is issued by the Foreign Ministry (Cancillería) and the photo is taken on site. This guide covers who to apply through, what to bring and the minor and lost-passport cases. Verified against the Cancillería requirements page, October 2026.
The 15-second answer
Attend in person at the office you choose with your valid cédula de ciudadanía. The page states plainly: “No es necesario llevar fotos” — the photo, fingerprints and signature are captured there.
Where you apply
- Foreign Ministry offices in Bogotá.
- Authorised governorate offices inside Colombia.
- Colombian consulates abroad.
You must attend in person at the office you choose for the photo, fingerprints and signature.
The photo is taken at the office
The requirements page says you do not need to bring photos; the image is captured when you attend. Colombia publishes no size in mm or px for this procedure, so none is stated here. For a photo needed by a different document, see the Colombia passport photo page or the photo size chart, and test it with the free passport photo checker.
Adults — what to bring
- Cédula de ciudadanía — original, valid and in good condition.
- First-time applicants: a contraseña from the Registraduría, plus a copy of the birth registration. A corrected contraseña is not accepted.
- Renewal / duplicate: the contraseña plus online validity verification.
- Old passport: show it if you already hold one.
- Lost or stolen: a sworn statement before the receiving office.
- Born abroad / re-registration: a certified copy of the birth registration (with cross-notes) plus copies of the parents' cédulas, or the death registration.
Minors
- A parent or legal representative must accompany the minor, identified with a valid cédula.
- If a parent has died, the death registration applies.
- If both parents delegate to a third party: a special power before a notary or judge, plus copies of both parents' documents.
- Foreign-language documents need an official translation with copies.
- After booking, the minor and the accompanying adult must both attend.
Fees and processing time
The official page consulted does not publish the fee or the processing time. Both are left blank here rather than guessed.
