Denmark Passport Application Guide

A Danish passport is applied for at your local kommune (borgerservice), while the police (politi) set the photo and document rules. This guide covers the split, the photo requirements and what to bring. Verified against politi.dk, October 2026.

The 15-second answer

Book an appointment and apply at your kommune, not at a police station. The photo must be 35 x 45 mm on a plain light background, colour or black and white. Denmark does not ban photo booths, children follow the same rules, and the police poster does not publish a photo validity window.

Where you apply (the split you need to know)

Do not turn up at a police station expecting to lodge the application — the passport is handled by the municipality.

Photo requirements

The rules have been in force since 1 August 2006. See the dedicated Denmark passport photo page for the full spec, and check your photo with the free passport photo checker.

Photo booths and photographers

Unlike some countries, Denmark does not ban self-service photo booths, so a booth photo is fine if it meets the requirements above. A studio photo is equally acceptable. Lay it out for printing with the print sheet.

What the poster does not say

The police requirements poster consulted for this guide does not publish a photo validity window (how recent the photo must be). That is left blank here rather than guessed — confirm with your kommune if in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for a Danish passport?
At your local kommune (borgerservice), by appointment. The police (politi) set the photo and document rules, but the application is lodged with the municipality.

What size photo does Denmark require?
35 x 45 mm, on a plain light background, with the head 30-36 mm from chin to the top of the head. It may be in colour or black and white.

Can I take a Danish passport photo in a photo booth?
Yes. Denmark does not ban self-service photo booths, so a booth photo is acceptable as long as it meets the requirements.

Can I wear glasses in a Danish passport photo?
You can wear glasses, but the frame must not cover your eyes.

Can I wear a head covering in a Danish passport photo?
Only for religious reasons. The face must still be clearly visible.

Do children need a different Danish passport photo?
No. The same photo requirements apply to children as to adults.

Source note: the requirement to apply at the kommune, the 35 x 45 mm size with a 30–36 mm head, the plain light background, colour or black and white, the glasses and head-covering rules and the 2006 effective date are from the Danish police requirements page politi.dk/pas/krav-til-pas-og-koerekortfoto and its official poster, checked October 2026. The poster does not state a photo age; none is given here.
