Iceland Passport Application Guide
An Icelandic passport is applied for online on Ísland.is, followed by an in-person photo appointment with the District Commissioner. This guide covers the flow, fees, validity and the child rules. Verified against Ísland.is and Þjóðskrá (skra.is), October 2026.
The 15-second answer
Apply on Ísland.is with electronic ID, pay the fee, then attend a photo appointment within 30 days. Processing is up to 4 working days from the photo appointment.
How the application works
- Apply online: begin on Ísland.is using electronic ID and provide the necessary information.
- Pay the fee (see below).
- Photo appointment: attend the District Commissioner within 30 days for the passport to be issued.
Adults (18 and over)
- Begin the application on Ísland.is using electronic ID.
- If more than 9 months remain on your current passport, you must apply directly at the District Commissioner’s office.
- Attend a photo appointment at the District Commissioner’s office within 30 days, presenting your previous passport, driving licence or identity card.
- You can book with the District Commissioner of Greater Reykjavik; with other District Commissioners no appointment is required for passport photography.
Children under 18
- If two parties share custody, both must consent.
- One guardian applies and pays; the other signs in to Ísland.is, selects “applications in progress” and approves. Approval must be received within 7 days, otherwise the application expires and is automatically refunded to the payer.
- The child must attend a photo appointment within 30 days; one guardian may accompany a child under 18 (with identification).
- If more than 9 months remain on the child’s passport, or a guardian lacks electronic ID, written consent is required (Form V-901).
The photo
A new photograph is always taken and a comparison photograph is always taken at the District Commissioner’s office. You may use a studio photo if you ask the studio to email it directly to the office you will visit. Photographs cannot be submitted by the applicant by email or on a USB drive. For the specification, see the dedicated Iceland passport photo page and test your photo with the free passport photo checker.
Processing, delivery and collection
- Processing: up to 4 working days from the date of the photo appointment; delivery time is added outside the capital area.
- Second source: the National Registry states 4 working days from the receipt of the application (weekends and holidays excluded) — the two bases differ, so plan for both.
- Collection: at Hagkaup (Skeifan, Reykjavík, 24 hours — collect within 7 days of arrival), at the District Commissioners’ offices, at the National Registry (Borgartún, 10:00–15:00) or abroad at an embassy or consul.
- The previous passport must be expired or invalidated before a new one can be collected at Hagkaup; collection there is not by proxy.
Fees
- Standard: 19,000 ISK (ages 18–66); 7,000 ISK (children, elderly and disabled persons).
- Express: 39,200 ISK (ages 18–66); 14,000 ISK (children, elderly and disabled persons).
Validity
- 10 years from the date of application for adults; 5 years for children under 18.
- Most EEA and Schengen countries require a passport or national ID to be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay.
