Luxembourg Passport Application Guide
A Luxembourg passport is issued by the Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office (BPVL), with applications also lodged at your commune’s Population Office. This guide covers the two-speed deadlines, the documents, the fees and the 6-month validity rule. Verified against guichet.public.lu, October 2026.
The 15-second answer
Apply in person and pay the fee. The standard procedure takes 7 working days, the fast-track 3 working days — counted only from when all documents are in. A standard 10-year adult passport is €50.
One document per person
Since the introduction of the biometric passport, the Grand Duchy issues one document per person. This means each child has their own passport; children are not listed on their parents’ passports.
Where to apply
- The Population Office (Bureau de la Population) of the communal administration of your place of residence.
- The Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office (BPVL).
You no longer need an appointment at the BPVL to apply for or collect a passport. The surnames and first names on the application must match the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPP).
Supporting documents
- An identity document.
- Your previous passport, if you have one; or, in the event of loss or theft, the declaration of theft or loss established by the police.
- The payment receipt of the fee, or a copy of the original receipt.
- As appropriate, a photo taken by a professional photographer meeting the ICAO standards.
The ID photo can be taken directly at the offices of the communal administration or at the BPVL. For the specification, see the Luxembourg passport photo page and test your photo with the free passport photo checker.
Deadlines
- Standard procedure: 7 working days following receipt of the application.
- Fast-track procedure: 3 working days.
- The time limit does not start running until all the necessary documents for issuing the passport have been submitted.
Fees
- 10 years (18+): €50 standard / €150 fast-track.
- 5 years (minors 4–18): €50 / €150.
- 2 years (minors under 4): €30 / €90.
Payment can be made online via MyGuichet.lu, by bank card at the BPVL, or by deposit/bank transfer. It must be made no more than 6 months before applying and no later than at the time of applying.
Validity and travel
Before travelling, check the passport will be valid long enough for every country you will visit. Some countries only grant entry visas to travellers whose passport remains valid for at least another 6 months after the expiry date of the visa applied for.
Collection
Passports are collected in person (or by a duly authorised person) from the BPVL or the Population Office of your commune. The receipt must be handed over and signed at collection. Passports must be collected within 6 months of applying; beyond that deadline the passport might be destroyed.
