Real ID & Driver's Licence Photos — What to Expect
A Real ID driver's licence or state ID is a federally recognised document, marked with a star (and/or flag) or the word “Enhanced”. Because the photo is usually taken at the DMV counter rather than submitted by you, the rules that matter are the ones about your appearance on the day, not a print you bring. Who takes the photo
For a Real ID you normally apply in person and the photo is captured at the DMV. That changes the failure modes compared with a passport photo you prepare yourself: you cannot retouch it, you cannot re-crop it, and you cannot re-shoot at home — so the moment of capture is the moment that matters. A small number of states also allow a photo to be reused from a recent state record; that is a state-level choice, so check your own DMV.

The federal page does not list a photo checklist, but the same appearance issues that fail a passport photo tend to fail a DMV capture. Use these to prepare:
