Financial evidence for a UK visitor visa is not judged on how large the balance is. It is judged on whether the documents clearly show that you have access to the funds, and where the money came from. What financial evidence has to show

Financial documents must clearly show that you have access to the funds. The guidance gives the kinds of document that do this: bank statements which detail the origin of the funds held; building society books which detail the origin of the funds held; and proof of earnings, such as a letter from your employer confirming employment details — start date of employment, salary, role, and company contact details.

The phrase to hold on to is the origin of the funds. A statement with a large balance but a recent, unexplained deposit does not show origin; a statement where salary arrives month after month does.

If a sponsor is paying

If someone else — your sponsor — is providing your travel, maintenance or accommodation, provide evidence covering four points:

Documents you should not use as evidence

The guidance names a set of documents that are less useful in visit applications. They include: bank statements or letters issued more than 1 year before the date of application; credit card statements; driving licence; educational certificates that are not listed as required for your visa; evidence of car ownership; personal photographs; notarial certificates; business cards; hotel bookings; flight bookings (unless transiting); photocopies of bank cards; certificates relating to leisure activities such as sports trophies; travel insurance; and a sponsor’s utility bills or council tax bills.

Several of these are the documents people add to look thorough — photos, business cards, hotel bookings. The guidance treats them as noise, and a flight booking can work against a genuine visitor case when the application is not a transit one.

Originals, not copies

Wherever possible, digital images should be taken of original documents, not copies. A photograph or a scan of the original statement is what the guidance asks for.

Family and group applications

If you are applying as a family or group at the same time, you do not need to provide multiple copies of the same documents.

What is not published

GOV.UK does not publish a minimum balance, and it does not publish a minimum number of months of statements to provide. There is no published minimum amount, and none is asserted here; the point of the documents is traceability — that the funds are yours, or your sponsor’s, and that their origin can be seen.
