Invitation and Sponsor Letters for a UK Visa
A visitor visa application is read from both ends: your own circumstances, and the UK side that is inviting or funding you. A letter is not a guarantee
GOV.UK states plainly that submitting or presenting the listed documents does not guarantee that a visit visa application, or entry at the border, will be successful. If someone else — your sponsor — is providing your travel, maintenance or accommodation, GOV.UK asks for evidence showing:- what support is being provided, and whether it extends to any dependent family;
- how this support is being provided;
- that the person supporting you has enough funds to adequately support themselves and their dependants;
- the relationship between you and the sponsor, for example if they are your family member or your employer.
Business events and conferences
If you are attending a business event or conference, GOV.UK says you should provide a letter of invitation from the organiser of the event you are attending. The letter comes from the organiser, not from your own employer.Paid engagements and speaking
For a permitted paid engagement, GOV.UK requires that you have a written invitation from a UK-based organisation or client for a pre-arranged event, that you can show you are an expert in your profession, and that you are 18 or over. The engagement must relate to your expertise, qualifications and main job in your home country. GOV.UK’s permitted paid engagement page ties the acceptable inviter to the profession. Professional artists, entertainers or musicians need an invitation from a UK-based creative organisation (such as a gallery, university arts faculty, school or events venue), an agent or agency, or a broadcaster. Professional sportspeople need an invitation from a UK-based sports organisation, agent or agency, or broadcaster. Qualified lawyers need an invitation from their client, plus confirmation of right of audience or a temporary call. Lecturers need an invitation from a UK-based higher education institution, research organisation, or arts organisation. Speakers at conferences need an invitation to speak from the organiser. Academic examiners or assessors need an invitation from a UK higher education institution or a UK-based research or arts organisation. Air pilot examiners need an invitation from a UK-based approved training organisation regulated by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The expertise evidence differs by route too: for an artist, published work, publicity material for recent performances, media coverage and reviews, or awards received; for an examiner, a letter from your employer confirming your area of expertise and examples of published work.Intra-corporate visits and crew
Two other letters appear in the guidance. For an intra-corporate visit — visiting the UK to work with UK-based colleagues — you should provide a letter from your employer confirming this, and if the visit involves working with clients, the employer should confirm that this is not the main purpose of the visit. For a pilot or cabin crew member travelling under a wet lease agreement, provide a letter from your employer confirming that you are employed by them and that a wet lease agreement is in place.Transit
If you are passing through the UK in transit, GOV.UK asks for evidence that your outward journey from the UK has been confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival, for example a travel booking confirmation, and that you can enter the country you are travelling to, for example a valid visa or residence permit for that destination.What is not published
