Chile Passport Photo Requirements — 4 × 5 cm, White Background
For a Chilean passport application at a consulate. The published requirement is a passport-size colour photo, 4 × 5 cm, on a white background, submitted to update the consular register. Note the route split: this is the consular rule, while inside Chile the photo is captured on site by the Registro Civil. Verified against the Chile consular page, October 2026.

What the requirement covers
Two things only are specified for the photo itself: it is a passport-size colour photograph, measuring 4 × 5 cm, on a white background. The official page does not publish a head-height percentage, a DPI or a pixel size, so none is given here. Compare it with the other formats on the full size chart, and check the framing once you have a crop with the free passport photo checker.
Consular route vs inside Chile
This 4 × 5 cm figure is the consular rule, applied when a Chilean abroad updates their consular register and applies for a passport or identity card. Inside Chile, the passport is issued by the Registro Civil e Identificación, where the photograph is captured on site rather than supplied as a print. So if you are applying in Chile, expect the photo to be taken for you; if you are applying at a consulate, bring the 4 × 5 cm white-background colour photo described here.
What to bring with the photo
- Your previous passport and a photocopy.
- A valid national identity card and a photocopy (if you have no Chilean ID, a birth certificate).
- For a theft, a police report; for a loss, a sworn declaration.
- Applicants under 18: authorisation from both parents, or a notarised authorisation legalised by the person with custody, including signature and fingerprint.
Fees at the consulate are US$137 for a 32-page passport (USD$134 plus USD$3 in consular stamps), US$138 for a 64-page passport, and US$12 for a national identity card, paid after the appointment. Processing time depends on acceptance by the Registro Civil in Chile.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Chile passport photo?
At a Chilean consulate, the requirement is a passport-size colour photo, 4 × 5 cm, on a white background, for updating the consular register.
Is the photo taken at the consulate or do I bring it?
At the consular route you bring the colour 4 × 5 cm photo yourself. Inside Chile, the passport photo is captured on site by the Registro Civil, so the 4 × 5 cm figure is the consular-registration rule.
What documents do I bring with the photo?
Your previous passport with a photocopy, a valid national identity card with a photocopy, and — if you have no Chilean ID — a birth certificate. Report a theft with a police report, or a loss with a sworn declaration.
What about children?
Applicants under 18 must present an authorisation from both parents, or a notarised authorisation legalised by the person who has custody, including signature and fingerprint.
How much does a Chilean passport cost?
A 32-page passport is US$137 (USD$134 plus USD$3 in consular stamps) and a 64-page passport is US$138. A national identity card is US$12. Payment is made after the appointment.
Is 4 × 5 cm the size used inside Chile too?
The 4 × 5 cm white-background photo is specified for the consular register update. Inside Chile, passports are issued by the Registro Civil, which captures the photo on site, so the printed-photo rule is the consular one.

Source note: the passport-size colour photo measuring 4 × 5 cm on a white background (as an update of the Consular Register), the document list (previous passport and photocopy, valid national identity card and photocopy, birth certificate where there is no Chilean ID, police report for theft, sworn declaration for loss), the under-18 authorisation by both parents or a notarised authorisation with signature and fingerprint, and the fees (32-page US$137, 64-page US$138, identity card US$12) are from the Chilean consular page chile.gob.cl “Obtención de pasaporte y cédula de identidad chilena”, checked October 2026. The domestic route (Registro Civil issuing the passport with the photo captured on site) follows the same page’s reference to the Servicio de Registro Civil; no in-country photo dimensions are published there.
