The official wording is explicit that you should not crop the photograph yourself to meet the size condition — have it produced to size. The office does not state a pixel or DPI figure, and it does not specify the number of photos.
The head and framing
The photo must be a close-up of the head and shoulders, with the head measuring 25–34 mm from chin to top of head. Face straight at the camera with a neutral expression and a closed mouth, eyes open and clearly visible. The whole head must be shown; a head covering is allowed only for religious or medical reasons, and the face must not be obscured.
Glasses, hair and accessories
- No sunglasses or dark lenses.
- If you wear glasses, there must be no reflection or glare and the frame must not cover the eyes — the office advises removing them.
- Hair must not cover the eyes.
- No shadows, and a strong contrast between face and background.
Print quality — professional only
The office states the photo must be in sharp focus and professionally printed, adding that home printing is usually not acceptable. Use low-gloss, pure-white photo-grade paper with nothing written on the front or back, and make sure it is free of damage such as paperclip marks. Only the applicant may appear — no toys, dummies or other people.
Children aged 5 and under
The same standards apply to young children: a light background, the child alone in the photo, the full face visible and both eyes open.
