Word frequency vs word count
A word count gives one number, the total length of a text; a word-frequency table breaks that total into individual words so you can see repetition and emphasis. Words are matched with a Latin-script rule: letters, digits and internal apostrophes count as a word, punctuation is dropped, and upper and lower case are merged unless you switch on the case-sensitive option. This tool does not perform Chinese word segmentation, so languages written without spaces are not split into words. Use it for self-editing and rough keyword-density checks, and treat the percentages as a share of the word list rather than a ranking guarantee. For a plain total, the word counter gives the count directly; the line sorter and text case converter handle other text clean-ups.
Frequently asked questions
Is punctuation counted as part of a word?
No. Commas, full stops and similar punctuation are treated as separators and removed, while an apostrophe inside a word is kept so contractions such as don't stay one word.
Are upper and lower case merged?
Yes by default, so The and the are counted together. Turn on the case-sensitive option if you want them ranked separately.
Does it work for Chinese or other languages without spaces?
No. This tool uses a Latin-script word rule and does not perform Chinese word segmentation, so text written without spaces between words is not split into individual words. Non-space scripts are outside its scope.
How is the percentage calculated?
Each percentage is that word's count divided by the total number of words in the text, shown to two decimal places. It reflects the share of the word list, not a search-engine keyword density score.
Can I export the table?
Yes. Press Export CSV to download the word, count and percentage columns as a comma-separated file, ready to open in a spreadsheet.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The counting runs in your browser with plain JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device and nothing is stored between visits.
