Denmark Passport Documents Checklist
A Danish passport is applied for at your local kommune (borgerservice), while the police (politi) set the photo and document rules. This checklist covers where to apply, the photo rules and what to bring. Verified against politi.dk, October 2026.
The 15-second answer
Book an appointment and apply at your kommune, not at a police station. The photo must be 35 x 45 mm on a plain light background, colour or black and white. Denmark does not ban photo booths.
Where you apply
- Apply: your local kommune / borgerservice, by appointment.
- Rules: set by the Danish police (politi), which publishes the photo and document requirements.
Do not turn up at a police station expecting to lodge the application — the passport is handled by the municipality.
The photo
- Size: 35 x 45 mm.
- Head: 30–36 mm from the chin to the top of the head.
- Background: plain and light.
- Colour: colour or black and white.
- Glasses: allowed, but the frame must not cover the eyes.
- Head covering: only for religious reasons, with the face clearly visible.
- Children: the same requirements apply.
The rules have been in force since 1 August 2006. See the dedicated Denmark passport photo page for the full spec, and check your photo with the free passport photo checker.
Photo booths and photographers
Unlike some countries, Denmark does not ban self-service photo booths, so a booth photo is fine if it meets the requirements above. A studio photo is equally acceptable.
Fees and validity
The official page consulted does not publish the fee or a photo validity window, so neither is stated here. Follow the Denmark passport guide for the application flow.
