South Africa Visitor Visa Checklist — What to Prepare

Updated September 2026 · What a South African visitor's visa application actually needs: a passport valid 30 days past your trip, Form BI-84, the fee, two colour photos and proof of funds — plus how your stay is counted once you land. Verified against the Department of Home Affairs, September 2026 — see the official types of visas page for the authoritative word.

Documents required for a South Africa visitor's visa — the short answer

The documents required for a South Africa visitor's visa are a passport or travel document valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit with at least one unused page, a completed Form BI-84, payment of the prescribed fee, a yellow-fever certificate if required, a statement or documentation confirming the purpose and duration of your visit, two colour passport photographs, and a return or onward ticket if you are travelling by air. Add proof of financial means for your living expenses, and the extra papers for any accompanying minors. The full list is set out below.

Searched for the South Africa visitor visa documents list? This is the whole set in one place — every item below comes from the Department of Home Affairs guidance cited on this page.

Who a South African visitor's visa is for

South African visitors' visas are for international travellers who have permanent residence outside South Africa and who wish to visit the country on a temporary basis for tourism or business purposes for a period of 90 days or less. A visa simply indicates that your application was reviewed at a South African embassy, mission or consulate and that the consular officer has determined you are eligible to enter the country for a specific purpose.

Not every nationality needs one. The Department of Home Affairs notes that requirements for visitor's visas differ from country to country and are subject to change. Each application is treated on an individual case, so you should make enquiries with your nearest South African mission or consulate abroad, or any office of the Department of Home Affairs, to see whether you are required to apply.

One practical warning from the same page: visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials are obliged to insist on a visa before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa you require, immigration officials are obliged to put you on a flight back to your home country. Sort the paperwork before you book.

Entry, the visitor's permit and how your 90 days are counted

A visa gets you to a South African port of entry — it is not itself the permission to stay. On arrival, an immigration official determines whether you are allowed to enter and for how long. On entry to South Africa, a visa is considered to be a visitor's permit. The permit's period of validity is calculated from the date of entry into the country and is set out under the heading "conditions" on the visa label.

Two consequences follow. First, count your days from the date you actually arrive, not the date the visa was issued. Second, visitors are restricted to the activity or purpose for which their visas were issued — entry may be refused if the purpose of the visit is not correctly stated. If you are visiting for tourism, say tourism; if you are attending a conference, say conference. Getting the category right at the application stage is what keeps the trip smooth at the border.

The fee: what the official page does and does not say

There is a fee for issuing a visa, and payment of the prescribed fee is one of the listed requirements — but the official page does not publish an amount. The Department of Home Affairs states that there is a fee charged, that the fee is payable in different currencies in different countries, and that it is updated annually. The page directs you to check the cost with the office you apply to.

So this checklist deliberately gives no figure: not published — do not assume. Any site quoting a single rand or dollar amount for every applicant is guessing. Confirm the current fee with your nearest South African mission or consulate, or the Department of Home Affairs office handling your application, before you pay.

Proof of financial means that actually fits the list

The official list accepts several forms of proof of financial means to pay for your living expenses while in South Africa. In practice you only need the ones that describe your trip honestly:

Pair the financial evidence with the statement and/or documentation confirming the purpose and duration of your visit: the two documents answer the two questions every officer asks — why are you coming, and how are you paying for it.

Children and minors travelling with you or joining you

If you have children travelling with you, or joining you in South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs requires additional documents on top of the standard set:

These are the same papers referenced in the entry requirements, where a child's journey has to be documented before boarding. Prepare them at the same time as the main application rather than chasing them afterwards.

Permitted purposes of a South African visitor's visa

The official page lists the purposes for which a visitor's visa may be granted. Match your trip to one of them and say so plainly in your supporting statement:

Because the visa is tied to its purpose, a tourist visa does not quietly double as permission to work, and a conference visa is not a general business visa. Choose the purpose that matches the trip you are actually making. If your plans overlap several categories, describe the primary one first.

Matching this checklist to the rest of the South Africa family

This page covers the visitor's visa (90 days or less). South Africa's other routes each have their own document sets, and the missions treat them as separate applications: the relative's visa, the business visa, the medical treatment visa and the general work visa are all on the site, along with the South African passport documents guide. Every country's checklist lives on the visa checklists hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit South Africa for 90 days or less?
Not everyone does. South Africa exempts citizens of many countries from visa requirements for stays of 90 days or less, and the requirements differ from country to country and can change. Check with your nearest South African mission or consulate to see whether you must apply.

How long must my passport be valid for a South Africa visitor's visa?
Your passport or travel document must be valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit, and it must have at least one unused page for entry and departure endorsements.

Which application form do I complete?
Form BI-84, the application for a visa. A completed Form BI-84 is listed among the documents required to apply.

How many photos do I need?
Two colour passport photographs. They are listed in the official document list for a visitor's visa application.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?
Only if it is required. The official list says a yellow-fever vaccination certificate "if required" — for example where your journey starts in, or passes through, the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America.

Do I need a return or onward ticket?
Yes if you are travelling by air. A return or onward ticket is listed among the documents required to apply for a visitor's visa.

How much is the South Africa visitor's visa fee?
The amount is not published on the official page. The Department of Home Affairs says a fee is charged, that it is payable in different currencies in different countries and that it is updated annually. Check the cost with the office you apply to — and do not assume a figure.

What counts as proof of financial means?
Bank statements, salary advances, undertakings by your host or hosts in South Africa, a bursary, medical cover, or cash available including credit cards and travellers' cheques.

What extra documents do accompanying minors need?
Unabridged birth certificates, proof of guardianship or custody, or consent from the guardian in the case of an unaccompanied minor.

What happens to my visa when I arrive in South Africa?
On entry a visa is considered to be a visitor's permit. The permit's period of validity is calculated from the date of entry and is set out under the heading "conditions" on the visa label, so your 90 days run from the day you arrive, not the day the visa was issued.
