Argentina Tourist Entry Guide 2026
Entering Argentina as a tourist is governed by the Migraciones documentation rules: an authorised stay of up to three months, extendable by another similar period, no paid work, and a valid passport or an accepted ID card. This guide sets out the entry categories, the tourist rules and the documents. Verified against the official Migraciones pages, October 2026.
Argentina's eight entry categories
Migraciones organises entry for foreigners into eight categories. Knowing which one you are entering under tells you which documents apply:
- Permanent residents (residentes permanentes)
- Temporary residents (residentes temporarios)
- Transitory residents (residentes transitorios)
- Precarious residents (residentes precarios)
- Tourists (turistas)
- Border-neighbour transit (tránsito vecinal fronterizo, TVF)
- Passengers in transit (pasajeros en tránsito)
- International transport crew (tripulantes del transporte internacional)
The tourist: three months, extendable once
The official definition of a tourist is an entry for rest or leisure with an authorised stay of up to three months, extendable by another similar period, and a tourist may not carry out paid tasks:
Turista: Es aquel extranjero que ingresa al país con propósito de descanso o esparcimiento, con un plazo de permanencia autorizado de hasta TRES (3) MESES PRORROGABLE POR OTRO PERÍODO SIMILAR. El extranjero que ingresa como turista no puede realizar tareas remuneradas.
In plain terms: 3 months + 3 months, and no working on a tourist entry. If you intend to work, that is a different category entirely.
Documents: passport or an accepted ID card
The requirement is a valid passport, or a valid ID card (cédula de identidad / travel document) issued by one of nine countries listed officially by Migraciones. The accepted countries are Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia — the MERCOSUR member and associated states. Holders of those documents can cross without a passport; everyone else uses a valid passport.
Before you travel
Confirm your document type against the list above, and check whether anything additional applies to your situation — for example, travellers under 18 may need an authorisation, so verify the current rule with Migraciones before you book. Keep the entry category you are using in mind: the eight categories above each have their own document set.
