Slovakia Passport Application Guide

Applying for a Slovak passport (cestovný pas) is a no-photo process: the office captures your face and fingerprints on site. This guide covers booking, the in-person step, age rules, collection and the overseas route. Verified against slovensko.sk and the Ministry of Interior, September 2026.

The 15-second answer

You can book online, but you must attend in person (only people without legal capacity are exempt). The reason is simple: the office captures your face and fingerprints on site (fingerprints from age 12). You bring no photo.

Step 1 — book (optional)

Booking online is available and lets you pick a slot, but it is not mandatory. You may also attend without a booking.

Step 2 — attend in person

In most cases you must be present. The only exception is a person without legal capacity. The reason you attend is not paperwork — it is because the office captures your biometrics on site: the staff first capture your face, then your fingerprints (from age 12).

Age rules

Collection

Once the passport is made, you collect it at the document office where you applied. From age 15, a person you authorise may collect it for you.

Applying from abroad

Overseas applications go through a Slovak embassy, where your face, signature and (from age 12) biometric data are captured on site — the same no-photo logic.

Why there is no photo to prepare

Unlike countries where you photograph yourself and crop to size, Slovakia takes the image for you. So there is nothing to prepare — but if you are arranging a photo for a different document, the photo size chart and the passport photo checker can help.

What to bring

The Slovakia passport documents checklist lists the supporting papers. Confirm the current requirements on slovensko.sk before your appointment.
